Description

Introductory course to Chinese. This course is for those with no previous knowledge of Chinese. Communicative context, with videos, audio, texts and conversation.

Target audience
  • All staff and students from Cambridge University Engineering Department

Topics covered

The course material will be based on the textbook Chinese in Steps Vol. 1. by George X Zhang, Linda Li and Lik Suen. We will aim to cover Lessons 1 to 6, which cover:

  • Introduction to Chinese characters
  • Pronunciation
  • Tones and the Pinyin system
  • Greetings
  • Numbers
  • Expressions of time
  • How to describe basic everyday activities
Objectives

To introduce you to the Chinese language, culture and learning skills.

Aims

To focus on listening and speaking, with a balance between reading and some writing skills.

Class work and individual study.
