This course will start at Basic level and move quickly through the basics of Italian grammar. Students with some background in the Italian language (Intermediate level) are most welcome to join the group in January (Lent term) when we start reading more complex, original texts.

Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading Italian documents that they have come across or may meet in their research.

A course specifically for NHS staff. Attendees will learn how to search databases accessed with an Athens login (such as Medline, Embase and Cinahl) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography.

All attendees are required to have an NHS Athens login. University of Cambridge staff and students wanting to learn similar material should book onto the Introduction to Literature Searching (for University) course instead.

This online session will explore the role of stakeholder analysis in programme/intervention design, evaluation planning, and reporting. It will also look at ways to undertake stakeholder analysis and stakeholder management. The session will comprise of practical guidance and opportunities for interaction.

Using a reference manager is one of the best ways to look after crucial research literature, whether planning for a literature review or simply keeping track of developments in a particular discipline. This session will introduce Zotero.

Using live demonstrations, discussions, and troubleshooting common referencing issues, the session will give an in-depth look at how Zotero (and tools like it) can help maximise a research project workflow while also ensuring that critical resources and information are not lost at any point in the research process.

Data management is a complex issue, but done correctly from the start, could save you a lot of time and hassle at the end of the project; when preparing your data for a publication or writing up your thesis. Research data takes many forms, ranging from measurements, numbers and images to documents and publications.

This module aims to help you get started with managing your data by introducing you to key principles around organising, storing, archiving and sharing your data. You will also learn how to create your own Data Management Plan.

The United Kingdom, alongside most other countries, enforces controls on the export of military and dual use (i.e. civil technologies which have the potential to be used for military purposes) items, software and technology (‘technology’ is defined as information necessary for the development, production or use of goods).

As such, researchers at the University of Cambridge may be subject to UK Export Control legislation, and also US export licence conditions for technology imported from the United States. These regulations have the potential to apply to a range of activities, including research, teaching, visiting scientists and technology transfer.

Failure to observe these rules is a criminal offence for the researcher (responsible for primary awareness as the application of the rules to their research) and/or the University (failure to provide adequate guidance/internal processes/regulation at the appropriate level). It is therefore extremely important that researchers and those who support researchers are aware of their responsibilities under law and University compliance procedures.

This session provides researchers and professional services staff with an understanding of the main export control requirements applying to research and the University's approach to compliance. There will also be an opportunity to raise questions and discuss issues relating to export control.

People think that long COVID is ‘just’ fatigue or a cough, but cognitive issues are the second most common symptom - and our data suggest this is because there is a significant impact on the ability to remember. Seven in ten long COVID patients experience concentration and memory problems several months after the initial onset of their disease’ says Dr Lucy Cheke who is the senior author of the ‘Cognitive and Memory Deficits in Long COVID’ study.

Research plays an important role in providing evidence that patients with Long COVID experience a significant impact on their ability to remember. Such a short sentence has enormous ramifications on my daily life as a patient with Long COVID, Lyn Curtis.

Dr Lucy Cheke is a Lecturer in the Psychology Department and head of the “Cognition and Motivated Behaviour” Lab. Her research explores various aspects of learning and memory, and in the past few years has focused particularly on the association between memory and obesity.

Lyn Curtis is an undergraduate student at the University of Exeter, and a patient representative member of the Covid and Cognition study group, headed by Dr Lucy Cheke. Her area of interest is the impact of Long COVID on menopausal females and the impact of hormonal dysregulation following COVID-19.

In this session, Dr Cheke will share the data about the long-term consequences of Covid-19 on cognitive functions in adults and Lyn Curtis will share her lived experience of Long COVID to provide insight into what this data looks like in daily life.

This participative workshop will enable attendees to confidentially discuss their reactions to students in emotional distress and consider effective ways of supporting them while managing attendees' own boundaries.

The workshop will be conducted in a relaxed and open way and will result in those attending feeling more confident in these interactions.

The workshop will also update attendees on available sources of local support for students.

In this session Rachel Bailey, from the University SPACE network, gives personal insights from her experiences of supporting and caring for someone with mental health issues.

Leadership Essentials is a key programme suitable for those with responsibilities for others’ work, behaviour and development, which aims to help managers refresh and build their skills and experience in this area. As well as clarifying key responsibilities, it focuses on critical areas that some can find more difficult, such as giving and receiving feedback effectively and handling challenging conversations. The programme incorporates tutor input; opportunities for discussion, reflection and sharing of good practice with others with similar responsibilities. It also includes curated e-learning resources to support managers with their ongoing learning and development.

Participants are required to attend both half day sessions.

A chance to practice Portuguese conversation/pronunciation with a volunteer native speaker.

These Portuguese reading courses are designed for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Latin American, Brazilian, Portuguese or Lusophone language, culture and heritage.

They offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce critical readings and interpretations.

The classes are going to be conducted primarily in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for oral and listening practice. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Portuguese.

The Basic course does not require any knowledge of the language while the prerequisite for the Intermediate course is a CEFR A2 level. The courses offer the possibility of progression and Basic students are strongly encouraged to continue with the Intermediate course.

Please note that these courses are attended by a number of very able, Spanish speaking students of Latin American studies and that the class dynamics are likely to be fast paced. For the rest of the students this might be challenging but also very rewarding and conducive to sound progress.

The courses will start from a Basic level and will aim at:

• Solidifying strategies of reading of academic texts;
• Recognition of the compositional structures of the texts;
• Recognition of basic use of Portuguese grammar units The students will be asked to perform weekly readings of a wide variety of texts.

Alongside that, they will be requested to do grammar exercises related to the basic structures of the language, such as verbs and their complements.

This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2/C1 level upwards) a chance to practice speaking Portuguese with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web links, videos etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for interaction at advanced level.
