This course will enable the participants to practice existing spreadsheet skills and develop more advanced skills within the context of UFS data. There will be the opportunity to extract data from the system and learn to manipulate, analyse and use it for reporting purposes. The Unix shell (command line) is a powerful and essential tool for modern researchers, in particular those working in computational disciplines such as bioinformatics and large-scale data analysis. In this course we will explore the basic structure of the Unix operating system and how we can interact with it using a basic set of commands. You will learn how to navigate the filesystem, manipulate text-based data and combine multiple commands to quickly extract information from large data files. You will also learn how to write scripts, use programmatic techniques to automate task repetition, and communicate with remote servers (such as High Performance Computing servers).

Do you have a deadline coming up or a piece of writing that’s long overdue? Or maybe some data analysis that keeps slipping to the bottom of your to-do list?

Our online retreats give you time, peace, and space to think and write. Each session will provide a friendly and constructive environment in which to meet like-minded peers, discuss challenges, and work in a focused way using the Pomodoro technique.

These virtual retreats are being hosted collaboratively across several institutions to encourage researchers across career stages and institutions to come together in a sustainable writing environment.

The retreats will take place several times per month throughout the academic year and you can attend as many as you like (within booking limits for each session).

Researchers are often faced with dilemmas and questions which put their integrity at risk. In these situations, how do you decide what is important for you and how to apply your awareness of good research principles into responsible conduct?

This workshop follows on from the self-taught online research integrity courses. It will provide you with additional resources, facilitate further discussion of the case studies, and explore the questions and challenges you face in your own research work.

Through small group discussion, you will have the chance to reflect on your experience and share best practice with fellow participants.

By the end of the course, you will understand:

  • the core principles and practices of research integrity
  • the difference between research misconduct and questionable research practices
  • the various factors that influence research behaviour and your own responsibilities
  • how researcher responsibilities outlined in the Concordat to Support Research Integrity relate to real-world situations
  • what good research practice means in the context of your own work.

A Critical Analysis of Null Hypothesis Testing and its Alternatives (Including Bayesian Analysis) (2 of 2) Finished 12:00 - 17:00 Department of Psychology, Psychology Lecture Theatre

This course will provide a detailed critique of the methods and philosophy of the Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST) approach to statistics which is currently dominant in social and biomedical science. We will briefly contrast NHST with alternatives, especially with Bayesian methods. We will use some computer code (Matlab and R) to demonstrate some issues. However, we will focus on the big picture rather on the implementation of specific procedures.

A webinar providing information on the level 4 Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship (duration 13 months) presented by Glen Suttie of Provek, who are Project Management Training specialists and will deliver this apprenticeship.

The session will provide an overview of what export control is and what is covered by UK export control legislation, what the exemptions are, how to comply with UK export control legislation, travel abroad with and remote teaching of controlled items / technology and how US export controls may impact research in UK universities.

The session will consider coping strategies, explore what support is available and ask what could be provided to further support researchers engaging in research where trauma is apparent.

This is an opportunity for researchers from all disciplines to explore the emotive aspects of research and the potential impact where traumatic events or interactions are experienced. Led by a PhD student, Jake Longhorn, participants will be encouraged to share their ways of managing these situations and Jake will be providing resources and personal advice on how he was able to move through his doctorate dealing with the impacts along the way.

Team working is a critical part of successful research and innovation. But working with others can be challenging when they don’t think or behave in the way we do.

In this half-day workshop, we will explore fundamental aspects of team working, including why having people in your teams who think and behave differently to you is essential for success.

We will look at different theories around teamwork and globally recognised tools, including LEGO Serious Play and Belbin Team Roles.

At the end of this workshop, you will understand:

  • why teams don’t need well-rounded people
  • how conflict between working styles can be turned to an advantage
  • why our expectations of team members (including leaders) can set them up to fail
  • and when choosing people to work with, why we need to look beyond their eligibility and consider their suitability.

This module introduces the use of R, a free programming language originally developed for statistical data analysis. In this course, we will use R through R Studio, a user-friendly interface. Students will learn:

  • Ways of reading data into R
  • How to manipulate data in major data types

  • How to perform basic inferential statistics

This course will introduce students to the central question of how to encode molecules and molecular properties in a computational model. Building on the compulsory informatics course (see previous table entry), it will focus on reactivity parameterisation and prediction. The basics of DFT calculations will be introduced, together with how DFT can be used to model reactions (including flaws, assumptions, drawbacks etc). Lecture based format will be complemented by practical sessions in setting up different DFT-based calculations.

This course will help you understand how to undertake a risk of bias assessment of a systematic review, assessing its reliability, trustworthiness, and applicability. The session uses the ROBIS tool to assess a preselected published systematic review.

Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading French documents that they have come across or may meet in their research.

The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion.

Classes will be conducted in English, but there will be many opportunities to use French and practise reading aloud.

This course is designed for learners who have very limited or no previous knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL). The course aims to enable individuals to understand and use BSL effectively for purposes of practical communication with deaf or hard of hearing people, to develop understanding of the BSL sentence syntax and to learn more about a Deaf Culture.

Please note this course is not credit-bearing and so cannot be used as part of a Tripos.

With effect from August 2022 CULP Advanced level students will be included in the population for the HESA student return. We obtain much of the information required via the annual student registration exercise. CULP students, who are not currently following another course of study, will receive an email inviting them to complete Registration. At the start of the student registration process there is further information about the data collection for statutory purposes and the relevant privacy notices from the University and HESA.

This intensive Persian course is designed particularly for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Persian language, culture and heritage. However the course can be equally useful for those who are interested in learning Persian for more general purposes.

We offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce spoken and written language on variety of topics.

The classes are going to be conducted more or less in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for speaking and listening practice in Persian. And the medium of class will swiftly change to Persian by the end of the term. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Persian and/or communicate in Persian with native speakers.
