Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading French documents that they have come across or may meet in their research.

The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion.

Classes will be conducted in English, but there will be many opportunities to use French and practise reading aloud.

Introduction to working with UNIX and bash (ONLINE LIVE TRAINING) (2 of 2) Finished 09:30 - 13:00 Bioinformatics Training Facility - Online LIVE Training

Using the Linux operating system and the bash command line interface, we will demonstrate the basic structure of the UNIX operating system and how we can interact with it using a basic set of commands. Applying this, we will learn how to navigate the filesystem, manipulate text-based data and structure simple pipelines out of these commands.

Building on the techniques learnt so far, we will then construct bash scripts combining the commands and structures already learnt into more complex, reusable tools. We will look at how we can apply these scripts to common problems faced in UNIX environments such as: communicating with remote servers; managing custom software installations and integrating these tools into our simple pipelines.

This course is targeted at participants with no prior experience working with UNIX-like systems (OSX, Linux) or command line interfaces.

This course will start at Basic level and move quickly through the basics of Italian grammar. Students with some background in the Italian language (Intermediate level) are most welcome to join the group in January (Lent term) when we start reading more complex, original texts.

This workshop explores the principles of good postgraduate supervision, different approaches to supervising, how to deliver feedback for best results, and the teacher/learner roles of the supervisor-supervisee relationship. It is aimed at new or experienced postgraduate supervisors looking to develop their skills in effective and inspired pedagogy.


Outcomes:

  • Understand the teacher/learner roles central to the supervision of postgraduate students
  • Explore good practice for delivering feedback
  • Understand possible issues and where to go for support in the Cambridge system

This session provides an introduction for both mentors and mentees. We will discuss the benefits of mentoring and provide guidance on how to set objectives for the mentoring relationship and how to prepare for your first session together. We will also offer some tips about how to be a good mentee and mentor.

Jacob Butler will deliver a talk on his recent masters project: The focus on quantitative data in outreach can lead to evaluation feeling more like a box-ticking exercise than an integral part of an event. Practitioner research, which is a framework intended to support those conducting research into their own practice, offers an approach that recognises the importance of sharing qualitative experiences and emphasises the need for clear communication between peers. I argue that adopting elements of this framework in our evaluation would help to share good practice, through an accessible record of our experiences, and encourage a more collaborative network across the many different areas in which we work. In this session, I will introduce practitioner research and how it can be applied to outreach, then open the floor to a discussion around its potential benefits and costs, with the aim of refining an approach that would work for all outreach practitioners in the university.

Using a reference manager is one of the best ways to look after crucial research literature, whether planning for a literature review or simply keeping track of developments in a particular discipline. This session will introduce Zotero.

Using live demonstrations, discussions, and troubleshooting common referencing issues, the session will give an in-depth look at how Zotero (and tools like it) can help maximise a research project workflow while also ensuring that critical resources and information are not lost at any point in the research process.

Partners in Philanthropy is a workshop for all development support staff, that provides a greater understanding of the concepts that make up the development process. Participants discover key elements of identifying their role in development, understanding donor motivations, and exploring how to better support the development process. The workshop also provides an understanding of development vocabulary and creates the foundation necessary to support a cohesive culture of philanthropy throughout the organisation.

The workshop will cover:

  • Introduction: A brief overview of the workshop, including the research and concepts that serve as its foundation, as well as the process of donor development and the roles of different team members.
  • Understanding Donor Motivation: Participants gain understanding of the development process from the perspectives of donors.
  • Becoming a High-Performance Team Member: Participants learn guidelines and skills for building trust-based relationships with both internal and external constituents.
  • Adapting to Donor Profiles: Participants learn how to identify the profiles of others and explore different personality styles and techniques for communicating with donors (and colleagues) more effectively.

Great if you're new to survey design or want to refresh yourself on this method, we'll be going over some examples from recent programmes' evaluation and sharing good practice in design, collection, and analysis.

These Portuguese reading courses are designed for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Latin American, Brazilian, Portuguese or Lusophone language, culture and heritage.

They offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce critical readings and interpretations.

The classes are going to be conducted primarily in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for oral and listening practice. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Portuguese.

The Basic course does not require any knowledge of the language while the prerequisite for the Intermediate course is a CEFR A2 level. The courses offer the possibility of progression and Basic students are strongly encouraged to continue with the Intermediate course.

Please note that these courses are attended by a number of very able, Spanish speaking students of Latin American studies and that the class dynamics are likely to be fast paced. For the rest of the students this might be challenging but also very rewarding and conducive to sound progress.

The courses will start from a Basic level and will aim at:

  • Solidifying strategies of reading of academic texts;
  • Recognition of the compositional structures of the texts;
  • Recognition of basic use of Portuguese grammar units The students will be asked to perform weekly readings of a wide variety of texts.

With effect from August 2022 CULP Advanced level students will be included in the population for the HESA student return. We obtain much of the information required via the annual student registration exercise. CULP students, who are not currently following another course of study, will receive an email inviting them to complete Registration. At the start of the student registration process there is further information about the data collection for statutory purposes and the relevant privacy notices from the University and HESA.

The Programme offers general language tuition with a focus on communicative competence.

At advanced level the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme. While the grammar is analysed within a context, explicit grammar instruction becomes an integral part of the course.

One of the aims of the advanced level courses is also presentation skills as the courses aim to cater to the academic needs (i.e. research, conferences) of the students.

The concept underpinning this course is one of fostering the learning of higher Advanced German language through listening (mainly films), reading (mainly literature), speaking and writing (both film and literature).

Every session will offer a choice of extracts either from the German* literary canon or from critically acclaimed films, or indeed both, which illustrate the session’s theme. These passages will be analysed by means of listening, reading and communicative exercises and will lead to a discussion about their aesthetic, wider cultural, historical and political implications and relevance today.
