Publishing a protocol -- stating in advance the search strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria, data analysis and other evaluative techniques -- is a core requirement for conducting a systematic review. The process of writing this protocol will also mean you have written in advance a large chunk of what will need to go into the finished systematic review, saving you a huge amount of time. This session will cover the contents and types of information you will need to provide in your protocol, and will give attendees the opportunity to write a draft protocol, as well as highlighting helpful resources and further support. UPDATE: Please note that this session is taking place remotely, not in the Medical Library as previously advertised. Please do not go to the Medical Library training room. You will be contacted by the training team with information about how to join the session remotely. Please note: this session may be recorded. This online course is geared towards non-native speakers who feel that they would benefit from the opportunity to have frequent practice in giving presentations in English. It will consist of a mix of teacher input, individual presentations and regular feedback. We will meet together for the first class (11.15am on Wednesday 28 April), and thereafter we will meet mainly in small groups of 4-6 students, at 11.15 am on either Wednesday or Thursday mornings. Depending on exact numbers, each group session will be between 1 hour and 1.5 hours long. Groups and precise times will be decided in the first class.

Please note that the Conversation Hours will be delivered online This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2 level upwards) a chance to practise speaking French with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web-links, videos etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for interaction at advanced level. Participants from French Advanced CULP are warmly invited to attend the French Conversation Hour. RD Live: Intercultural Communication

RD Live brings Researcher Development to life with sessions featuring a specialist presentation, discussion and Q&A. Hosted by the RD team fortnightly via Zoom, each event focuses on a particular theme relevant to postgraduate students such as re-planning your PhD, funding & registration, and more. 35% of Cambridge research students are from outside the EU; and postdocs are the most diverse group by nationality, representing almost 100 countries. This diversity is one of the University’s biggest strengths. Yet intercultural communication is not without its pitfalls and misunderstandings. It takes conscious discipline to think about one’s own cultural assumptions and to try to make sense of others. With the world moving online we have created functional yet complex conditions for communication (for both teaching/ learning and collaboration). Video conferencing and certainly overcome the geographical distance but what are its implications on talking to people who are different to us? Is it more effective or does it create an additional hindrance? This session offers the chance to reflect on inclusivity in this very VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous) world. |

Dr. Paul Seabright (Deputy Director) and Matt Whiting (CTO) of Cambridge Enterprise <http://www.enterprise.cam.ac.uk> will share some of the ups and downs of their transition from on-premise to the cloud, which has been more rapid and radical than many of our institutions. As the University's knowledge transfer organisation, Cambridge Enterprise uses commercial avenues to develop the outputs of University research into successful products and services that benefit society. Their lessons and caveats may help others consider the practicalities when implementing a 'cloud first' strategy.
The new SLRA, available via SUPC <https://www.supc.ac.uk/frameworks> and other University purchasing consortia <https://www.ukupc.ac.uk>, provides multiple pre-negotiated agreements (lots) for software and services, working with a range of suppliers to help save institutions time and money. Academia, key supplier for lots such as with Adobe and VMware licensing <https://edu.academia.co.uk/software-slra>, will provide an overview and practical introduction how to make use of the new SLRA. |

Improvised comedy, better known simply as “improv”, describes a wide variety of theatrical forms which all share the key characteristic that content, scenes, and characters are creating spontaneously by the performers. Successful improvisors embody a set of core skills, summarized by the phrase “Yes, and…”, which can be readily taught and learnt, and which can be used by practicing scientists and science communicators to provide a framework for more effective communication and collaboration. Although born in very different contexts, improv’s core skills embody the values underpinning the shift to more participatory and dialogic forms of public engagement in the UK in recent decades. This training is an unashamedly entertaining and enjoyable introduction to improv for scientists hoping to do better when undertaking challenging intellectual tasks in front of others and when interacting with others when you wish to be—and wish to be seen to be—responsive to their perspectives and opinions. The training is not about being funny or making people laugh, but is instead about the underlying skills which lead to successful improv, and no one should be put off for a fear of “not being funny enough”. As a highly interactive training, everyone must be minimally comfortable talking in front of others in order to get the most out of the course. |

Please note that the Conversation Hours will be delivered online This conversation hour offers learners with a lower-intermediate conversational ability (A2/B1 level upwards) a chance to improve their speaking skills with others in a relaxed and informal setting led by a native-speaker facilitator. Come along and take it in turns to choose a conversation topic of personal interest each week. This could be one that's familiar to you but you want to practise more. Devise 4-5 questions to get the conversation started. Example topics could be holidays, food, traditions or hobbies. Receive feedback on your pronunciation and accuracy, and try stretching yourself further. Suitable for those who completed Arabic Elementary 1 and 2 Culp courses or those who have a B1 level in the CEFR.
