Shipping Biological Materials (IATA) Course Finished 09:00 - 15:00 Department of Chemistry, Unilever Lecture Theatre

This is a one-day specialised CAA approved training course aimed at those departments shipping biological materials by air (IATA). It will use the 2020 IATA Regulations and will cover the full classification, packaging, labelling and documentation required to ship the following goods:

  • Infectious Substances (Category A)
  • Biological substances (Category B) (e.g. samples, vaccines, bloods, etc)
  • Exempted goods – (e.g. cell lines, DNA)
  • Genetically Modified Organisms

It will also cover the requirements for the supplementary materials encountered, such as dry-ice, dry-shippers and samples that are in small amounts of potentially flammable, or toxic, preservative fluids.

Successful candidates will receive a training certificate valid for two years, restricted only to the materials described above.

For completeness, transport by road and rail etc will also be covered.

Core Statistics using R (ONLINE LIVE TRAINING) (4 of 6) Finished 09:30 - 13:00 Bioinformatics Training Facility - Online LIVE Training

This award winning virtually delivered course is intended to provide a strong foundation in practical statistics and data analysis using the R software environment. The underlying philosophy of the course is to treat statistics as a practical skill rather than as a theoretical subject and as such the course focuses on methods for addressing real-life issues in the biological sciences.

There are three core goals for this course:

  1. Use R confidently for statistics and data analysis
  2. Be able to analyse datasets using standard statistical techniques
  3. Know which tests are and are not appropriate

R is an open source programming language so all of the software we will use in the course is free.

In this course, we explore classical statistical analysis techniques starting with simple hypothesis testing and building up to linear models and power analyses. The focus of the course is on practical implementation of these techniques and developing robust statistical analysis skills rather than on the underlying statistical theory.

After the course you should feel confident to be able to select and implement common statistical techniques using R and moreover know when, and when not, to apply these techniques.

These sessions are aimed at those who are brand new to HEAT (Higher Education Access Tracker) and who will want to be added to the live database as their institution’s Operational Lead or User with all Reports. 

If you are only going to need Read Only or Read Only with Export permissions this training is not required.

Virtual - Grants Part 3: Viewing Grants in CUFS (2 of 2) Finished 10:00 - 11:00 Via MS Teams

This course provides an overview of the Grants module in CUFS. The course will cover how you can view your projects and awards, check budgets, perform on-line queries and run some CUFS reports.

The course material will be split over 2 webinars on consecutive days

This session provides an introduction for both mentors and mentees. We will discuss the benefits of mentoring and provide guidance on how to set objectives for the mentoring relationship and how to prepare for your first session together. We will also offer some tips about how to be a good mentee and mentor.

Collaboration Tools: Microsoft Teams - Virtual Train the Trainer (Live Online using MS Teams) new (3 of 3) Finished 10:30 - 13:00 UIS Online Microsoft Teams 4

Are you new to teaching online? It is natural to feel apprehensive of this mode of delivery, virtual training has an additional skill set to those in a classroom based situation, and though your existing training skills remain essential, there is another layer of technical expertise to master.

This online virtual workshop will help build your confidence delivering training sessions and give you an opportunity to practice and to receive feedback from other trainers. The emphasis of the course is not about the method and practice of teaching as an academic subject or theoretical concept, this is a hands-on workshop where you can practice in a safe environment.

Before the workshop session, you must create an activity or convert one of your existing courses to an online version, and be prepared to present a 15-20 minute session. You will need to demonstrate that you have thought through and manged the pre-course bookings, communications and activities as well as competence using an online delivery tool.

The workshop will be friendly and supportive with a maximum of three participants. You must have Teams installed on your computer to participate.

  • Session 1 is optional for those who are unfamiliar with the Teams application to receive basic hands on training.
  • Session 2 is guidance concerning the management of a successful online training event.
  • Session 3 is the peer-reviewed workshop, you will both teach a session and review the other instructors.

Though this is an informal training session you may like to review the competences required to achieve certification by CompTIA

If you book:

  • You should have Teams installed on your local computer, but you could deliver your course using a different tool such as Zoom, but no instruction using different tools is given.
  • You will need a webcam and a mic.
  • Add the event to your calendar by following the link in your booking confirmation email and click Add to Calendar.
  • Install the Microsoft Teams app. (It is possible to join using Edge or Chrome but there is less functionality when using a browser).
  • Important: The instructor cannot troubleshoot access to Microsoft Teams on the day of the course. If you are in an institution that is managing their own Teams tenancy (CAMENT, JBS, medschl and some of the colleges) then you may not have access to the files or calendar used in the course. Please contact the instructor in advance to discuss this.
  • If you are using Hermes for your email you will not be able to create a meeting or Breakout Rooms.
  • It's advisable to make a test call in advance of the session.
  • The course will start promptly at the time shown
  • Do contact your instructor beforehand should you wish to check your audio and visual setup or you have any questions.

Chef and food writer Rosie Sykes in a collaboration with Bea Brown and Cambridge Sustainable Food spends some time talking about all the good things we can eat and cook in July including talking about surplus produce and how to make the most of food.

Rosie Sykes is a chef, writer & consultant. She has worked with some of the leading names in British food. She had her own pub in central London & has helped establish kitchens for restaurants, delis & hotels nationwide. Rosie has written 3 cookery books & now works mainly on community projects.

Interested in seeing the inside of our West Cambridge Data Centre and understand more about how this is run and the innovative features reducing the energy usage? Then this is for you. Ritchie Carter will guide a small group of UIS staff around the West Cambridge Data Centre (WCDC).

Note that due to ongoing works in the WCDC, the group size is very limited. If there is sufficient demand as gauged via the waiting list, additional sessions may be able to be arranged later in the year

This course is suitable for students who have studied or picked up Spanish at basic level and who want to revise and progress onto intermediate topics and language and to discover Hispanic culture. The main focus is learning through communication and interaction. We will get together from home with Zoom, which offers us many possibilities to watch videos, listen to audio, read texts, write (there is even a whiteboard!) and especially speak in small and large groups. ¡Te esperamos!

Please note: This course will be taught in person and online. The Monday, Wednesday and Friday classes each week will be class room based/face to face teaching at CUED. The classes on Thursday 7 July and Tuesday 12 July will be taught online, using Zoom.

Introduction to working with UNIX and bash (ONLINE LIVE TRAINING) (2 of 2) Finished 14:00 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Facility - Online LIVE Training

Using the Linux operating system and the bash command line interface, we will demonstrate the basic structure of the UNIX operating system and how we can interact with it using a basic set of commands. Applying this, we will learn how to navigate the filesystem, manipulate text-based data and structure simple pipelines out of these commands.

Building on the techniques learnt so far, we will then construct bash scripts combining the commands and structures already learnt into more complex, reusable tools. We will look at how we can apply these scripts to common problems faced in UNIX environments such as: communicating with remote servers; managing custom software installations and integrating these tools into our simple pipelines.

This course is targeted at participants with no prior experience working with UNIX-like systems (OSX, Linux) or command line interfaces.

A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Simplifying our Processes team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

A short (10 minute) briefing covering the biological and other hazards to watch out for when walking through the PoM or carrying out independent non-experimental work, such as maintenance, cleaning, repairs to equipment, giving first aid, taking items through to Maxwell and vice versa, OR accompanying others who need authorised access (e.g. contractors).

If you will be located at the PoM or doing experimental work, you should attend the full PoM Induction instead (see "Related Courses").

Yin Yoga and Meditation new Finished 11:00 - 12:00

Yin yoga is a slow deep practice perfect for the body and mind to find synchronicity and balance.

While the body lets go of tension held in the muscles, helping you find a soothing deep stretch, yin is suitable for all and simply requires a few yoga blocks, bricks a cushion or three and a space to lie down, if you've a cat or dog that like to stretch with you - perfect!

We'll finish our practice with a yoga Nidra, known as yogic sleep.

Get some fresh air and take a tour of the University Farm.

You will get a look at what goes on in the farm as well as the opportunity to see some livestock.

This tour is wheelchair accessible.

It is easy to rush through the day without noticing our thoughts, feelings and sensations. Mindfulness practice helps us pause and become present, so we get in touch with our authentic experience. We can so easily become entangled in energy draining thoughts that drive our emotions and lead to stress or anxiety. Mindfulness practice helps us notice these thoughts so we can deal with them better. Mindfulness is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). See NHS Mental Health

Esther Hunt is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Education, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Registered Psychotherapist. She has been teaching Mindfulness for 5 years and was instructed by bestselling author Dr Patrizia Collard. She provides sessions for HR staff wellbeing services, school leadership teams, University students, and in the charity sector. Esther presented at the Festival of Wellbeing in 2021.

This intensive course is designed for students who have very limited or no previous knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL). The course aims to enable students to understand and use BSL effectively for purposes of practical communication with deaf or hard of hearing people, to develop understanding of the BSL sentence syntax and to learn more about a Deaf Culture.
