PLEASE NOTE The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching as many courses live online, with tutors available to help you work through the course material on a personal copy of the course environment. We aim to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout.

This bootcamp provides an in depth look at statistical analyses using R.

Day 1 aims to introduce R as a tool for statistics and graphics, with the main aim being to become comfortable with the R environment. As well as introducing core R language concepts, this course also provides the basics of using the Tidyverse for data manipulation, and ggplot for plotting. It will focus on entering and manipulating data in R and producing simple graphs.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are already comfortable working in R and using the tidyverse package, you might find that you can skip Friday’s training session. Please review the pre-requisites section below for further information.

Day 2-6 (half days) will focus on the statistical possibilities of R, covering from experimental design to analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. Ample time will be given to participants to practise different type of analysis and interact with the trainers to discuss their statistical problems.

This event is organized in collaboration with the Babraham Institutes's Bioinformatics Group and it is supported by the BBSRC Strategic Training Awards for Research Skills (STARS) grant (BB/P022766/1).

Virtual - How to Excel - Part 1 & 2 (For Finance Staff) (1 of 2) Finished 09:30 - 11:30 Finance Division, At Participant's Desk

This course will enable the participants to practice existing spreadsheet skills and develop more advanced skills within the context of UFS data. There will be the opportunity to extract data from the system and learn to manipulate, analyse and use it for reporting purposes. The course runs over two sessions and participants will need to attend both of these sessions.

Virtual - GL 1: Getting Started in the General Ledger module (1 of 2) Finished 09:30 - 11:00 Finance Division, At Participant's Desk

This course enables users to learn the basics of how the General Ledger module works, how to run online account enquiries and how to process journals.

It is run as two webinars with some pre-course reading

Webinar 2: Optional, if you are not going to be using journals it is not compulsory but may be of interest

Want to extend your knowledge of Teams? Then join us to learn how to use applications to record notes, create a Wiki, manage a small project and create online forms or surveys. This is Part 3 of 4 courses that provide you the opportunity to get a hands on and in-depth insight into Teams.

Please note that the course is taught using Microsoft Teams and you must have Teams installed on your computer to participate.

You will:

  • Gain an insight into what is possible through tabs
  • Practice using applications that you need to work with i.e. OneNote, Wiki, Planner, Forms.

Masterclass: Managing Your Time & Motivation to Get Results new Finished 13:00 - 14:00 Phoenix 2, Phoenix Building, New Museums Site

Join us for this masterclass to find out how you can manage your time differently and increase your impact in your research and wider projects. Our time is our biggest asset and we need to develop our time management skills throughout our career and life to take into account new responsibilities and environmental factors.

We will cover:

- What do you do with your time? We will identify a range of diagnostic tools which can help you prioritise your time management challenges and identify habits which impact your productivity. - Using you time more effectively and becoming time affluent: We will explore ways to manage time efficiently and effectively without feeling exhausted at the end of the day! - The art of motivation and focus: We will assess the role of feelings, emotions and mindsets in our ability to focus and maximise our research and impact.

The masterclass, designed and presented by Natacha Wilson from Cambridge Insights will include a mix of evidence- based frameworks and best practice.

These meetings will be tailored to your individual needs and provide an opportunity to consider and discuss topics relating to learning, skills and personal development. This is not an exhaustive list but topics may include a variety of issues including:

  • Managing your time whilst working from home
  • Collaborating effectively
  • Maintaining resilience and coping strategies
  • Reflecting on and identifying your key areas for development


Each meeting will last for up to 45 minutes and, given the present circumstances relating to Covid-19, will be conducted online using Teams or Zoom.

This year, to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, Yvonne McPartland, Deputy Head of the Staff Counselling Centre, will be delivering a session on suicide prevention for staff in Cambridge.

The shocking reality is that suicide is the most common cause of death in men aged under 50 and the suicide rate is currently increasing after many years of decline. This equates to more than 6,000 deaths by suicide annually in the UK and Ireland.

What impact will Covid-19 have on suicide numbers?

The session is designed to give staff the confidence to challenge the taboo around suicide that makes it such a difficult subject to broach, with colleagues, family members, friends and even total strangers: what is it OK to say, what should I be looking for and what should I do next?

The session will increase awareness around suicide, dispel some myths and share some lessons from experience at the Staff Counselling Centre. It will also remind staff what the centre can offer them.

The message is that having a conversation could really save a life.

This compulsory session introduces Research Data Management (RDM) to Chemistry PhD students. It is highly interactive and utilises practical activities throughout.

Key topics covered are:

  • Research Data Management (RDM) - what it is and what problems can occur with managing and sharing your data.
  • Data backup and file sharing - possible consequences of not backing up your data, strategies for backing up your data and sharing your data safely.
  • Data organisation - how to organise your files and folders, what is best practice.
  • Data sharing - obstacles to sharing your data, benefits and importance of sharing your data, the funder policy landscape, resources available in the University to help you share your data.
  • Data management planning - creating a roadmap for how not to get lost in your data!
  • This training will be made available on Moodle on 4th August 2020. To attend this course, please book Session 1.
