Many of us feel lonely at times. Feelings of loneliness are personal and everyone's experience will be different. You may only feel lonely at certain times or experience a deep feeling of loneliness that goes on for a long time.

You might have a lot of social contact and still feel lonely, especially if you don't feel understood or cared for by the people around you. Communication with others might be online and through social media and an illusion of connection could mask the loneliness we feel.

You are welcome to join our hour-long webinar, to explore aspects and understanding of loneliness and share suggestions and ideas that could help in addressing and managing the times when we feel lonely.

SCM Staff Yoga Class (In Person Face To Face) new Wed 22 May 2024   12:00   [More dates...] [Places]

Yoga with Daisy Worzencraft is primarily about having fun, giving things a go, and trying - with a sense of humour and a smile on your face! It's a non competitive practice, with modifications for different levels. All she asks is that you try, and that you practice with a sense of pleasure and enjoyment, rather than expectation, frustration and tension.

For Daisy, Yoga has been a consistent friend in her life - especially in times of need - and had nothing to do with perfecting poses!

Speed Mentoring event new Thu 12 Sep 2024   14:00   [More dates...] [Places]

Have you ever wished you could get 10 minutes with a senior colleague to ask their advice on how they would handle something? Have you ever wondered how others approach challenging problems? This is your opportunity to ask. We are bringing together a panel of very experienced colleagues from across the University for a special speed mentoring session so that they can offer you their support and advice.

Speed mentoring offers you the opportunity for a series of short, focused conversations about a specific question or issue you are struggling with. You will rotate around four different mentors, spending around 10 minutes with each, to gain different perspectives on an issue you are seeking to resolve or a project you are trying to progress.

"I liked that there were a diverse background of university staff involved in the session, and all of the mentors were really engaged and enthusiastic. I felt that I could be honest about some of my experiences in the University, good and bad. All the mentors I spoke to acted as a good sound board for the issues that I wanted to discuss and they have given me some excellent advice and ideas."

"The fact that we saw 4 different mentees was brilliant - we gained different perspectives, saw different mentoring types and were also introduced to people and roles we may not have known about."

Mentors:

• Charlotte Knights - Senior Professional Services Manager, Human Resources Division

• Andy Hyland - Learning and Development Consultant, Human Resources Division

• Kirstie Buckridge - Organisational Development Consultant, Human Resources Division

• Bruce Daniels - Assistant Director for Research Operations School of Physical Sciences, Research Office

• Suzanne Fowler - Head of HR Policy and Strategic Projects, Human Resources Division

• Elle Wills - ED&I Advisor, Cambridge University Libraries

During change we often focus on what will be delivered and if it will be right for the job, but we often focus less on the need to support, reassure, and motivate those impacted by change – the people side of change.

This short session for staff with people-management responsibilities (including PIs, supervisors and team leads) will explore approaches to the people side of change in the context of the University. Whilst high-level sponsorship provides senior leadership and the rationale for change, research shows that direct line managers have the most influence on how their team respond to change by helping to support people in understanding, preparing for, and adopting changes in working life and practice. “Change happens one person at a time.” Prosci.com.

Using the HR Transformation Programme and the introduction of myHR as an example, we will look at how the approaches we are using to support colleagues across the University can be applied to the changes you may be leading in your team or area.

Join us to consider skills and techniques for supporting people through change, using consistent language to help build our individual and collective change capability, for the everyday changes and for the more significant ones.

Supporting People with Unseen Disabilities: Webinar new Self-taught Booking not required

As part of the Festival of Wellbeing and in partnership with the Leaders and Managers Network, this session by Dr Hisham Ziauddeen will consider how we can understand unseen disabilities and support people with disability in the workplace, particularly as we move to new ways of working together.

The impacts of COVID on the disabled community and the challenges for the future will be considered. Disabled people are one of the groups in society that have been hit hardest by the pandemic and in the world of COVID, where we are moving to ‘life as normal’ and ‘living with the virus’, they will continue to be significantly affected. We need to understand these in order to think about how we can support our colleagues through the coming times

Access the recording of the Supporting People with Unseen Disabilities Webinar.

By the end of this workshop, you will have heightened confidence in designing and delivering compelling seminars that rely on pedagogical principles for creating an inclusive, engaging and cooperative learning space.

This workshop aligns with D1 and A1 & A2 of the HEAs Professional Standards Framework (PSF), I.e., with the ‘Associate Fellow’ level. This workshop does not result in recognition or a qualification but can be considered as part of an application.

This session is an opportunity for you to ask questions and to find out more about the development opportunities that Cambridge is offering you – for both the Team Leader or Supervisor Level 3 and the Leadership and Management Level 5.

We are looking to explore what interest there is at this current time in both apprenticeships and hope that there will be sufficient interest to establish University-wide cohorts. By establishing University-wide cohorts, we are looking to encourage more departments to use apprenticeships as a way to provide focused professional development for staff. Participants will have the advantage of a peer group to work through the programme with Cambridge University Press and Assessment who are potentially interested in joining in with this.

Thanu Mahendra of Corndel, our approved training provider for these programmes will present and be available to answer any questions or concerns that you may have before submitting an expression of interest.

Programme details of each apprenticeship can be found via the links below:

Team Leader or Supervisor Level 3

Leadership and Management Level 5 (Operations or Departmental Manager)

There is a minimum of 18-20 people required for each programme, for a cohort to run. Depending on the level of interest shown, it is intended that these apprenticeship cohorts will start in September 2024. However you will also have the opportunity to join an open (public) cohort if we are unable to reach sufficient numbers for a closed cohort. Entry to these cohorts will be by application and is open to all University employees who meet the eligibility criteria.

A link to the session will be sent with the joining instructions when your booking is confirmed.

Further information from the provider, Corndel.

Following a recent announcement by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCO), the Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) will be expanded to international researchers as well as international students.

The ATAS scheme currently applies to certain international students who require a visa to study in the UK and are intending to study at postgraduate level in certain sensitive subjects which may be “against the UK’s national interests”, predominately in programmes to develop Advanced Conventional Military Technology (ACMT), weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) or their means of delivery.

From 21 May 2021, the ATAS will be extended to cover ‘researchers’ intending to work in the UK in areas of research in these same sensitive areas. The ATAS requirement will only affect those applying for Skilled Worker, Tier 5 GAE and visitor visas.

The briefings is run by Graeme Ross, Immigration and Compliance Manager for the HR Division. The briefing covers the known areas of guidance on how the scheme will operate, who will be eligible for an ATAS certificate, and the potential impacts on recruitment and immigration at the University.

The Secrets of Storytelling new Tue 7 May 2024   10:00 [Places]

Storytelling is the secret weapon that can help you get on in life, from demonstrating leadership and establishing a reputation, to motivating a team, persuading and influencing, and attracting new business and partnerships.

It’s a deeply human trait to love stories. They account for about two thirds of conversations, according to research, play on our emotions, light up our minds, and are far more likely to be remembered than mere facts.

Which makes good storytelling the most powerful method of marketing, raising profile, and pure and simple selling, whether it’s your agenda, your business, or your vision.

From the hook of how to start you story, to an emotional ending, and everything in between, this high energy, highly interactive workshop covers all you need to know to become a scintillating storyteller.

You will have the opportunity to work on these individually and then reflect back as a group.

Session 8: How to cage your confidence gremlins

In this episode podcast hosts talk about common gremlins that can mean we stall or get stuck in our careers and some of the ‘foods’ (people, past, and places) that grow our gremlins. Questions, (a lack of) Answers, and Navigating a Persistently Changeable Field

Being a PhD student means you will probably spend around three or four years managing changes and adjusting research and funding, which can be a stressful and difficult time. If you remain in academia, this could continue. Professor Michelle Ellefson addresses these difficulties from a range of perspectives and aims to provide you with ways to cope living within an uncertain structure during your doctoral studies.

This workshop is designed to help PhD students optimize their time and increase their productivity. In this workshop, we will explore a variety of time management strategies and tools to help you prioritize your tasks, meet deadlines, and achieve your academic goals.

We will guide you through practical exercises that will help you identify your priorities, create realistic schedules, and manage your workload efficiently. We will also cover essential tools and techniques for managing your time effectively, such as the Pomodoro Technique, time-blocking, and goal setting.

When we talk about turning a thesis into a ‘book’, we are really talking about a ‘monograph’. In keeping with the etymological sense of the word, a monograph is generally considered a written work that focuses on one specialised subject with a view to contributing original insight and knowledge.

Given a doctoral thesis – particularly in the arts, humanities and social sciences – is a dedicated study on one specialised topic or area of research, it stands to reason that it is a kind of proto-monograph. This course is concerned with turning a proto-monograph into a fully-fledged and published monograph, i.e. a book. The aim, therefore, is to familiarise students with the process of, and the various issues involved with, turning their PhD thesis into a published monograph.

Mentoring can be a really useful tool in supporting colleagues to develop their professional lives and careers, in both roles as a mentor and mentee. UIS facilitates a mentoring scheme exclusively for the University's IT community and UIS' internal staff.

  • Role of the mentor
  • Questioning skills
  • First meeting
  • Grow Technique

For Mentees: Read the PPD Mentoring Guide and we highly recommend reading the following pages:

Starting a new role in any new place of work can be daunting and for a place like the University it can feel slightly more dauting. Giving new starters a warm welcome and a properly planned onboarding process cannot be underestimated for their successful career at the University or any organisation. What does successful onboarding look like, how can leaders and managers ensure their newcomers receive this. We explore this in the podcast from two perspectives, one from a new employee’s perspective and two from a line manager’s outlook.

Access the recording of the Welcome Onboard - A New Starters Journey at Cambridge Podcast.

Welcome to New Staff Mon 24 Jun 2024   09:00 [Full]

Following the introduction of the Professional Services Values of trust, respect, integrity and collaboration, we are offering this opportunity for you to consider how you can align these with your own personal values, and what this might mean in terms of how you live your life and go about your work.

This is an interactive session, so please join the call from somewhere where you feel comfortable to talk and participate fully in group activities.

Working with Bacterial Genomes (IN-PERSON) new Mon 22 Jul 2024   09:30 Not bookable

This comprehensive course equips you with essential skills and knowledge in bacterial genomics analysis, primarily using Illumina-sequenced samples. You'll gain an understanding of how to select the most appropriate analysis workflow, tailored to the genome diversity of a given bacterial species. Through hands-on training, you'll apply both de novo assembly and reference-based mapping approaches to obtain bacterial genomes for your isolates. You will apply standardised workflows for genome assembly and annotation, including quality assessment criteria to ensure the reliability of your results. Along with typing bacteria using methods such as MLST, you'll learn how to construct phylogenetic trees using whole genome and core genome alignments, enabling you to explore the evolutionary relationships among bacterial isolates. You’ll extend this to estimate a time-scaled phylogeny using a starting phylogenetic tree. Lastly, you'll apply methods to detect antimicrobial resistance genes. As examples we will use Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae, allowing you to become well-equipped to conduct bacterial genomics analyses on a range of species.

Working with your Supervisor new Tue 4 Jun 2024   10:00 [Places]

The student-supervisor relationship is vital for success in all research degree programmes. However, the exact role of the supervisor is often unclear and sometimes it may feel as though you are not getting the support you need. This can be frustrating for students and supervisors alike, and can lead to a negative doctoral experience.

This session is designed for those from the Dept. of Engineering who have attended a Worktribe training session and would like a refresher of the system. In the session staff will also be shown the reporting functionality in Worktribe, update on processes and PI access/ perspective within the system.
