This session will be made available to people who are unable to attend the session. The recording will be accessible via a link, which will be available via the Researcher Development website, and will be available for two weeks, after which it will be removed.

The Transkribus Guided Project new (2 of 2) Finished 16:00 - 17:00 Cambridge Digital Humanities Online

We introduce the Transkribus software system that can be taught to read handwriting from images of documents and rapidly convert it into useful digital formats. This guided course provides basic training by practical immersion in this software, which requires only basic IT skills. Transkribus was developed by READ under the Horizon 2020 funding framework and is now a co-operative. It had 20,000+ users in 2019, and is becoming a standard research tool for mass transcription of archival sources. Participants will transcribe anonymised data from pre-loaded scans of forms filled out for the French national census of 1999 in Transkribus's downloadable software interface. These manual transcriptions will help train a handwritten text recognition (HTR) model to automatically transcribe many more of these forms later. In fact, the model will eventually allow the creation of one of the largest data sets ever attempted from manuscript sources. This course is a collaboration with Transkribus and Cambridge Digital Humanities. It is funded by a Cambridge Humanities Research Grant.

This course will enable the participants to practice existing spreadsheet skills and develop more advanced skills within the context of UFS data. There will be the opportunity to extract data from the system and learn to manipulate, analyse and use it for reporting purposes. The course runs over two sessions and participants will need to attend both of these sessions.

This course is designed for Training Administrators of a new provider on the University Training Booking System (UTBS) and it will take them through theory and practicals on how to administer their training programme on the UTBS. The course is taught using Microsoft Teams and you must have Teams installed on your computer to participate.

Medicine: Risk of Bias Assessment - Systematic Reviews (for University and NHS) Finished 10:00 - 11:00 Cambridge University Libraries Online

This course will help you understand how to undertake a risk of bias assessment of a systematic review, assessing its reliability, trustworthiness, and applicability. The session uses the ROBIS tool to assess a preselected published systematic review.

We ask that you read a paper that will be provided before you attend the session, in order for us to make the best use of the time together.

Departmental health and safety induction for people starting at the Department of Physics between July and end of September 2020.

Session 1 of this briefing is for everyone and covers what to do in the event of an emergency, and how to report problems.

There will be a short break before Session 2, which is for people carrying out practical experiments in a laboratory, doing other practical (e.g. maintenance) work, managing events or other people.

Both sessions will be conducted live on MS Teams. Details will be sent to you with joining instructions.

Identification of Eigen-genes, consensus modules and Network Motifs in co-expression (or other biological) networks. (Webinar) Finished 11:00 - 13:00 Bioinformatics Training Facility - Webinar (Time Zone = BST in Summer, GMT in Winter)

One of the most important tasks of systems biology is to create explanatory and predictive models of complex biological systems. Availability of gene expression data in different conditions has paved the way for reconstructing direct or indirect regulatory connections between various genes and gene products. Most often, we are not interested in single interactions between gene products; instead, we try to reconstruct networks that provide insights into the investigated biological processes or the entire system as a whole.

This webinar will expand upon the concept of Gene Co-expression Networks to elucidate Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA), and introduce the importance of visualising clustered gene expression profiles as single ‘Eigengenes’. It will describe the complete protocol for WGCNA analysis starting from normalised Gene Expression Datasets (Microarrays or RNA-Seq). This will be followed by a discussion on methods of extraction and analysis of consensus modules and Network motifs from Gene Co-Expression Networks and Transcriptional Regulatory Networks.

The webinar will be presented in the form of a lecture and tutorial with screenshots that enable listeners to emulate the protocols in R. Note that this is a webinar and not a coding exercise. Links to further reading and practice will be shared.

This course is an essential component of training for new laser users, which should be backed up by practical training in departments.

The course may be suitable for users of other classes of lasers, depending on the risk, but please discuss this with your Laser Safety Officer first.
