MySQL: Implementing a Relational Database Design

This beginners course equips you with the skills to implement a relational database design entity relationship diagram (ERD) into a MySQL database. Please be prepared for a fast paced course, but the materials provided can be used for consolidation after the course.

All University and College staff and students

Confident general computer skills. A basic understanding of programming concepts would be helpful but is not required.

Part 1:

• Connecting to and Disconnecting from the MySQL Server
• Creating tables
• Applying PKs and FKs
• Inserting data
• Modifying table structure
• Update and delete data
• Using LIKE, BETWEEN, and wildcards to find data
• Querying data from one table (select)
• Using comparison, logical and arithmetic operators
• Concatenation of data
• Using aliases
• Grouping and ordering data
• Aggregation of data: SUM AVG MIN MAX COUNT

Part 2:

• Subqueries
• Querying data from multiple tables through joins
• Input data from, and output data to a text file
• Backup and restore
• Create users and granting privileges
• Remote login

Two half day sessions, please note that you will not have time in class to complete all the exercises therefore you may want to complete them outside of the teaching sessions
