Description

Get your research seen on social media! Shoot, adapt, edit & schedule visual content about your work to inform and excite. Learn from examples, activities and reflection. Taught by a filmmaker and social media manager with over 15 years experience in the field. Focus will be on IG, Twitter, YouTube & FB but skills and knowledge can be applied to all platforms. All you need is your phone, laptop & internet connection!

The course will be led by Ryd Cook. Ryd is a multi award winning film director, actor and mentor. His fiction and documentary films have screened in film festivals around the world. He has 15+ years of experience, filming, editing and producing a range of films. He has also been teaching practical filmmaking for over 10 years for all ages. He currently works as a director, cameraperson, actor and mentor.

Prerequisites
  • Participants who have already completed the Your Research Video training
  • Participants who have already have a video/films they have made.

All registered participants will be asked to send in the answers to the following questions. This is to ensure that the trainer knows a bit about your experience and can better support you. Please email your responses to clare.hutton@admin.cam.ac.uk latest two weeks before the first session.

Objectives

Participants of this course will learn:

  • how to get your video on different platforms and seen by as many people as possible.
  • Titles, hashtags, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, descriptions, presentation and more will be covered in this course in case studies and activities.
Aims

Distribute & promote your visual material on social media platforms

Format
  • Session 1: 10:00-11:45 - Intro, Examples & Planning.
  • Session 2: 15:00-16:45 - Critique visual material students have shot. Short: Shooting tips, musts: Size, orientation, framing.
  • Between sessions 2-3: *OPTIONAL WORK* Shoot new content or Planning & Curating current content
  • Session 3: 09:00-11:00 - Editing Video & images resolutions, sizes and software recommendation. Editing Da Vinci adapting a video to suit social media. Canva image editing & design.
  • Between sessions 3-4: Homework: Prep one post (video or image)
  • Session 4: 09:00-11:30 - Distribution & promoting. Include create post? Titles, Descriptions, Hashtags, timings, scheduling etc
  • Last 30mins: Q&A & check in about follow up & mentoring
System requirements
  • A fully charged smartphone with a camera and/or a digital camera capable of shooting video
  • Laptop (plugged in or charged) or Desktop computer
  • Headphones or earphones
  • Phone’s &/or Camera’s USB cable to transfer footage
  • Strong internet connection

  • If you have Adobe Premiere Pro, use this. Other editing software for computers or phones is fine too, but please let trainer know.
  • Optional but very useful: Tripod that works with smartphone, tripod for your digital camera.
