Theme: Research Expertise

The UK has an obligation to ensure that goods, technology or software that can be used for a military purpose or contribute towards the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction are not exported into the wrong hands. This may affect research data, research equipment or publications, even in areas that have no intended military application. This training course provides an overview of export control legislations and how it may impact academic research, collaborations and outputs.

Research integrity is core to the requirements of being a research leader, producing excellent research and helping others do the same. This session will, through a mixture of presentation, discussion and case studies, explore the:

1. University's expectations as regards integrity & how research leaders can apply this in their own work
2. approaches that research leaders can use to support their teams and colleagues to meet the highest standards
3. the issues of research integrity and misconduct, including the challenges posed by authorship.

The course will be delivered by the Research Governance and Integrity Team in the Research Strategy Office.

Researchers are often faced with dilemmas and questions which put their integrity at risk. In these situations, how do you decide what is important for you and how to apply your awareness of good research principles into responsible conduct?

This session will, through a mixture of presentation, discussion and case studies, explore the the questions and challenges postdoctoral researchers face in their research practice. We will share hints, tips, and resources and encourage participants to reflect on and share best practice and their experiences. Through small group discussion, you will have the chance to reflect on your experience and share best practice with fellow participants.

In these situations, how do you decide what is important for you and how to stay close to your values while protecting your integrity and respecting the relevant professional codes of conduct? Our self-taught online research integrity module introduces the basic research integrity concepts.

This workshop facilitates further discussion of the case studies introduced in the moodle course and explores the questions and challenges researchers face in their research practice. We will share hints, tips, and resources and encourage participants to reflect on and share best practice and their experiences.

This course seeks to provide you with an overview of the principles, responsibilities and importance of research integrity. We will cover what research misconduct looks like, how it can be avoided and reported, and where you can find help for maintaining and promoting integrity in your research work.

The course consists of two parts. The first part is the learning section, and will take approximately 30-40 minutes to complete. The second part is a 10 minute quiz to test your knowledge. Please ensure you complete both parts in order to complete the course.

There are three versions to account for disciplinary variation:

• Biological Sciences and Clinical Medicine
• Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences
• Technology and Physical Sciences

This module provides an overview of human tissue legislation in the UK; good practice and practical tips for compliance. It was developed by the MRC in consultation with the Human Tissue Authority and others.

MRC Certificate

• If you would like download a certificate of course completion, you may take the relevant MRC assessement
• The assessments consist of 10 randomly generated questions; the pass mark is 70%.
• You may repeat the assessment as many times as you wish. A certificate can be printed when you pass the assessment.

This e-learning module is available via the MRC Regulatory Support Centre’s e-learning platform. It will introduce the principles and guidelines laid out in the MRC ethics series document Good research practice: Principles and guidelines.

This course is intended to support local induction material for new starters, and act as a reminder and entry point into the GRP document for more established staff, and will take about an hour to complete. You can visit the module as many times as you wish and complete it over several sessions. Your progress through the course will be tracked so you can pick up where you left off.

This self-paced online course provides an introduction to principles of responsible research and innovation. Responsible research and innovation (RRI) is an approach that anticipates and assesses potential implications and societal expectations with regard to research and innovation. It includes, but goes beyond, considerations of ethics, public engagement, risk and regulation.

The UKRIO pilot course provides a comprehensive grounding in research integrity for those new to the topic as well as an essential refresher for more experienced staff.

This self-paced course is structured into three interactive modules:

• Module 1: Introduction to Research Integrity
• Module 2: Research Integrity in the UK
• Module 3: Leading by Example

You will have 12 months to complete the course.

3. Click on the UKRIO learning package in the Moodle in order to fully launch the UKRIO course
