In a world where there is never enough time and we are juggling multiple priorities, this session will explore ways in which to identify areas in our lives that we need to improve and utilise the Lotus Blossom tool to generate ideas for making that improvement happen. Lotus Blossom provides a useful tool at all stages of the continuous improvement cycle whether it is used to find the root cause of a problem or to generate ideas to overcome that problem. In this session, we will demonstrate how it can be used to address more personal areas for improvement.
This session aims to provide an understanding of the prevalence, myths and stereotypes surrounding sexual violence as a background to learn the skills to appropriately respond to disclosures from students and others.
There will be a focus on the practicalities of dealing with someone in distress, what to do in the event of being a first point of disclosure, what questions to ask and what to record. The session will also discuss how to think about risk and will provide an outline of the support and the University and police reporting options available.

The Session covers detailed background and case studies of Legionella Bacteria and how it can colonise in domestic water systems. Current legislation and guidance regarding responsibility in detail, monitoring and control measures, record keeping and escalation procedures.

This self-paced online course provides an introduction to principles of responsible research and innovation. Responsible research and innovation (RRI) is an approach that anticipates and assesses potential implications and societal expectations with regard to research and innovation. It includes, but goes beyond, considerations of ethics, public engagement, risk and regulation.
The last two years before retirement are a good time to prepare for personal change in readiness for leaving employment. We offer two different pre-retirement courses and recommend that you book on to both.
This course includes detailed information on finance, planning and tax and legal issues. You will have the opportunity to share information and discuss any concerns about retirement in a relaxed setting.
Legal Advisors from Barr Ellison, Cambridge will explore some of the key legal issues that you may wish to consider when approaching retirement i.e. Wills, Trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney.
A Financial Advisor from Dartington Wealth will give a detailed overview of the different ways in which you may wish to consider managing your retirement income. They will give details of how tax is collected in retirement and answer questions.
HR colleagues will outline the possible options for retirement for Established staff and the processes involved with each option, as well as the actions that need to be taken.

This is a supported group for PhD students who are returning to study after an extended time away from study, for example, after being in the workplace for a long period of time. It will be co-facilitated by the Inclusive Learning and Development Manager and a current 2nd year PhD who returned to study after working for a long period of time.
Objectives of this group:
- An opportunity to share experiences, both challenges and positive
- A space to recognise the challenges of this transition and an opportunity to explore the support that is currently in place and if it is enough or if there is other support that could be provided.
Outcomes for this group:
- Connect with other PhDs and provide peer-support – hopefully meeting up outside this termly meet up

This is a follow up Question and Answer session to an introductory video on risk management in your research. This is an opportunity to ask questions raised by the video presentation or discuss any cases or scenarios you are currently working on.
The discussion can cover:
- Risks associated with your research project and how to manage them;
- How your research project impacts the University finances;
- The role of the Research Office and different parties therein and available support.
The course is designed to give attendees the necessary skills to carry out risk assessments.

The course will teach intermediate R object-oriented programming and how to build a fully functional R package.

- The Faculty of Education has recently adopted the University’s new room booking system Booker, and would like to invite you to a briefing session to learn more about the system.
- Booker is a free, user-friendly, quick and robust cloud-based service that provides an effective means of managing rooms within any Department and also promotes the sharing of available room space. It’s part of the Education Space project being run by Professor Graham Virgo to improve the space utilisation within the University and to provide a uniform approach to the booking of rooms, both within departments and across University sites.
- The Faculty of Education is hosting a briefing session during which the Booker team will provide a short demonstration of the system and its capabilities and you’ll be able to put questions both to the team and to current users of the system.

The Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Research Fellows (DHFs), will discuss their experience with the Royal Society’s funding schemes.
This talk will be relevant to final-year PhD students and researchers from postdoctoral level upwards working in life and physical sciences (excluding clinical medicine) and engineering. The presentation will cover Early Career Fellowship schemes, Senior Fellowship schemes, Innovation schemes, Research Capacity/Infrastructure schemes, and Collaboration and Travel schemes.
How to succeed in your PhD! A one day course which prepares final year PhD students for finishing the writing up, surviving the viva and moving on into postdoc or other employment. All research students in the Graduate School of Life Sciences are expected to attend this highly-recommended course at some point in their final year.

This running session will be organised by Helen Marshall and Richard King and will appeal to runners at different levels from beginners to more experienced runners. The activities will commence with a quick briefing and words of encouragement (in the first year lab). Runners will be provided with route information and the groups will have a group lead who will ensure that everyone is encouraged and walking/jogging or running at their level..
Depending on the level of interest 3 choices are proposed as follows:
1/ A 2km (roughly 1 mile) walk/jog which is aimed at people who don’t normally go jogging. The simple aim being to complete the very achievable distance. 2/ A 4km (roughly 2 mile) jog for people who feel able to keep running but at a nice slow pace. The aim being to complete the distance without stopping. 3/ A 5km run for experienced runners.
Please indicate which option you are interested in when booking.
After the event we will all meet up for a cup of tea.
